Optical Character Recognition (OCR)

OCR is the process where a computer scans in a text document as an image and then converts it to a text file that a word processor, such as Microsoft Word, can read and edit. This methods saves patrons the trouble of retyping a paper before they can work on it if they don't have a copy saved to disk.

Scanning is performed by an IT Services Desk staff member for the patron. The patron should bring a disk so the paper can be saved after it has been scanned. The pages to be scanned should not be marked in any way (i.e. a professor's comments in the margins) as it will make your document harder for the computer to read.

OCR Scanning costs $1.00 per page.
Please proofread your document after it has been scanned for errors, as OCR is not always perfect and may make mistakes. Symbols and characters related to math, chemistry, engineering, etc. are not recognized. Only common letters, numbers, and punctuation will be recognized.
