Reference Service

A professional library staff is available to provide one-on-one assistance and training, with the intent of teaching patrons how use the library and conduct their own research on musical and dramatic subjects. In addition, circulation desk clerks are available to answer directional questions and provide basic explanations of policies.

Getting Assistance

Music & Dramatic Arts Library staff will

  • Assist patrons in finding the items and information they need.
  • Train patrons to use the library, reference sources, and reference databases.
  • Provide "ready reference" assistance (brief factual information such as composers' dates).
  • Assist patrons in using library equipment.
  • Provide library instruction or instruction in music/drama information literacy for classes upon request.
  • Consider requests for new materials.

Music & Dramatic Arts Library staff generally will not

  • Supply answers to students' homework.
  • Do patrons' research.
  • Research incomplete or inaccurate call numbers and citations for reserve items.
  • Compile bibliographies.
  • Retrieve books, scores, or scripts for a patron.

(In all the cases above we will provide assistance and training.)

This policy was adapted and/or quoted from a policy originally posted by the William and Gayle Cook Music Library, Indiana University.
