Books

For books available at the University of Connecticut, search our catalog, Homer. The link for Homer is on our library web page.  Non-reference books can be requested through ILL.

For books within the state of Connecticut, search ReQuest, the catalog of all public and state-supported college and university libraries available through Iconn, available for free. Most of these titles are available through ILL.

To identify possible books on a topic, use WorldCat, a database available through UConn. From the homepage, click on “most used databases” and then WorldCat. This searches libraries all over the world, but mostly in the US. These books are generally available through ILL.

Journal Article Citations

The most effective means of finding journal article citations is to search journal indexes. At UConn we have online access to hundreds of journal indexes.
The best indexes for biology are:

Biosis – the best general biology database, includes all areas of the life sciences; back to 1969.
AGRICOLA – U.S. agriculture and life sciences information; back to 1970; from the Nat'l Agriculture Library.

ASFA (Aquatic Sciences & Fisheries Abstracts) – best for fresh water or marine biology;  back to 1971
Cab Direct – best for agriculture or applied plant and animal sciences, also includes parasitology, veterinary sciences and entomology; back to 1973.
IPA (International Pharmaceuticals Database) - pharmaceutical, medical and health related journals published worldwide; back to 1970.
PubMed / Medline – the premier database for clinical and research medicine; back to 1966. From the Nat'l Library of Medicine.
SciFinder Scholar – formerly known as Chemical Abstracts, the primary index for chemical information, including biochemistry; back to 1967.
Web of Science – multidisciplinary database formerly known as Science Citation Index. Primary source for citation searching. Back to 1994 on the web.
The best index for education is:

ERIC - the best database for education topics in the US; back to 1966. From the US Dept Of Education

Journal Articles

Once you have a citation, you need access to the full text of the article. Many of our databases have direct full text linking to electronic journal articles. However this is a still an exception-ridden process, and some databases still have little direct access available., and few will have any access available prior to 2002.

Newspapers

We have some excellent newspaper and current event resources. Some are available through IConn and all through UConn.
Infotrac – available through IConn or through UConn – about 2/3 fulltext, both newspapers and magazines
LexisNexis Academic Universe – the most complete newspaper index we have through UConn.
Newssatnd Through IConn – Hartford Courant, New York Times, Washington Post, etc  for current issues. Also available thru UConn
New York Times Historical – through UConn; historical pdf’s of the paper back to 1851;  great for historical research.
