What is ECR?
ECR or Electronic Course Reserves is a service provided by the University of Connecticut Libraries that combines the efforts of the instructor, library staff, University ITS, and course designers to provide online access to course materials. The access point is HuskyCT. Faculty place requests to have materials scanned, and library staff scan and upload files into the Library Resource Tool in HuskyCT.
In HuskyCT, ECR can be seen after clicking on the Library Resource Tool (LRT) icon on the home page of Courses. The links for ECR will be under the category, Online Course Reserves.
Faculty FAQ
How can I expedite my reserve request?
Faculty may be able to expedite the processing of course reserve materials by taking the following steps:
- Use works that are in the public domain
- Request materials in their original hardcopy format where possible
- Include the title page and copyright notice from each work
- Provide written permission from copyright owner(s) when lengthy portions of copyrighted materials are requested for reproduction
- Limit the amount of material requested from a book to one (1) chapter or 15%, whichever is greater
- Limit the amount of material requested from a journal issue to one (1) article or 15%, whichever is greater
Materials that exceed these suggestions will be reviewed by library staff, as time and processing procedures permit, for inclusion in course reserve in light of the four factors of fair use to limit the university’s liability for possible copyright infringement.
How do I put items on Reserve?
- How do I put material on on Reserve?
- Bring in material and indicate on the Reserve Request Form whether or not you will be providing the material.
- If you will not be providing the material, the library will retrieve our copies or request a chapter or journal article copy through ILL. Student FAQ
Login Problems
When I log in, I do not see one of my courses. The instructor said he was puttting things on Reserve.
The professor may not have requested a HuskyCT site from UITS. You can check HuskyCT courses to see if the course is set up.
When I log into HuskyCT and click on the ECR link, I get an error message that says "There are currently no documents available for this course." or "You are not enrolled for this HuskyCT course." What does this mean?
- There may not be articles available in ECR for this course. - Contact Reserve Services or your professor.
- You may be using a browser that does not work with ECR. Some versions of Internet Explorer 5 do not work with ECR in HuskyCT. Try a different browser before updating your current browser. Contact the UITS Help Desk, 486-HELP to see if it is necessary to update your browser.
Printing
Some of the pdf documents print in mirror image? How do I prevent this?
- After clicking on print, select the box that says Print as Image. (Only do so if the screen looks fine, but the print out only looks right if held up to a mirror.)
- Choosing Print as Image will slow printing. You may want to lower the dpi of the printer when selecting Print as Image in Adobe Acrobat. Make sure you deselect this option after printing.
For more information on printing, contact the UITS Help Desk 486-HELP
Opening ECR
When I click on the article link, it looks like the document will open, but the word "done" is at the bottom of the screen even though the document doesn't open.
- You may have to update your Adobe Reader for pdfs
The article link takes me to an error page, and/or asks me for a password.
- Your instructor may have added a link to an article that goes to an library subscribed online journal. If you are off campus, you will need to use the VPN or Proxy to access online eJouranals leased by the library.
